Mentoring and Advising

I have had the privilege and pleasure of mentoring and teaching students at the Doctoral, Master, and Undergraduate levels at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and University of Toronto. In this capacity, I have advised a dozen students, who have gone on to graduate studies at Yale University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, among others, and are now gainfully employed in professional careers in consultancy, finance, law, and higher education in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K.

I am actively accepting graduate students for supervision in my areas of research. Interested students may email me their CV, research interests/proposal (if available), and their transcript. You are also advised to have a look at the scholarship schemes available to support your graduate studies.

Below are courses that I am currently teaching.

Advanced Quantitative Methods

This is a doctoral-level course that covers modern quantitative and computational methods in the social sciences, as well as their intersections with health sciences. It focuses on thinking quantitatively, analytical techniques, and critically assessing the role of quantitative methods in a fast-evolving world with Big Data and artificial intelligence.

Issues in Health Sociology

This is a doctoral-level course that brings sociological insights to the study of health and related issues. It provides an examination of the theoretical and empirical contributions of researchers to the study of culture, race, class, gender, inequality, and other topics as they intersect with health policy, conceptions of health and illness, health experiences, and treatment.

Social Policy and Social Development in China

This is a master-level course that examines the trajectory of economic and social development of China since Deng Xiaoping's reforms in 1978 to present. Reflecting on this history of development, it examines the architecture of social policy in China in general, as well as specifically in poverty, migration, healthcare, housing, environmental regulation, and related topics.
